Shopify Collabs is free, native to the Shopify admin, and good at one job: connecting you with creators from Shopify’s network and paying them commissions.
It is not program management software. Roster is built for the work that starts after a creator says yes, and for activating the customers you already have rather than recruiting strangers. Most brands that outgrow Collabs outgrow it on operations, not on tracking.
Collabs is a marketplace. You browse Shopify’s creator network and invite people who have never bought from you. Roster starts from the opposite end: your customer list. The people who already spent money with you convert better and stay engaged longer than creators recruited cold.
New creator signups to Collabs have been paused indefinitely, which limits how much the network grows. Creator availability is restricted to the US, Canada, and the UK. Brands need at least $10,000 in trailing twelve-month sales to appear in Collabs Network Discovery at all. And there is no built-in vetting, so separating creators who will produce from creators who want free product is manual work.
Collabs has no subscription, but Shopify takes 2.9% as a processing fee on every commission payout. Roster charges a flat subscription and takes no percentage of your sales.

Where Shopify Collabs is the better choice
If you are starting from zero with no customer base to activate, Collabs gives you creator supply you do not have. It is free, it installs in about twenty minutes, and it lives inside an admin you already use.
For a brand testing whether creator marketing works at all, that is the correct first step. There is no reason to buy software to answer a question a free tool can answer. Come back to this comparison when the manual overhead starts costing more than the software would.
Outgrown the spreadsheet that sits next to Collabs?
Get a demoThe usual trigger is operational, not technical. You have thirty or forty creators, you’re tracking them in a spreadsheet, gifting is manual, you have no rights to reuse the content they’re producing, and nobody has time to keep them engaged.
Your existing Collabs creators can be imported into Roster and moved onto Roster links and codes. Roster’s Shopify integration handles attribution the same way.
Many brands keep Collabs installed for discovery while running the actual program in Roster. That is a reasonable long-term setup rather than a migration.
There is no subscription, but Shopify takes a 2.9% processing fee on commission payouts.
Yes. Some brands use Collabs for discovery and Roster to run the program. Use one system for attribution so sales are not double-counted.
No. It is built into the Shopify admin and only works for Shopify stores. Roster supports Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, and others.
Shopify paused new creator signups indefinitely. Existing creators are unaffected, but the network is not growing.
Not to use it. That threshold applies to appearing in Collabs Network Discovery, which is how creators find you.
Collabs finds creators. Roster recruits your customers, licenses their content, and keeps them active. See it working on your store.
