Set the smart link

A smart link has three parts: the destination URL, the link appearance, and an optional customer discount. Use the rstr.co short form and the member link becomes something like rstr.co/yourbrand/jane.

Choose the customer discount

On Shopify you can attach leakproof codes, which generate a fresh single-use code when a customer arrives from an ambassador link, or attach the ambassador’s own shareable code instead.

Let members build variants

From the portal, ambassadors create link variants pointing at a specific product or collection, or one per channel, and see clicks and orders for each variant separately.

Why single-use beats a vanity code

A leakproof code is generated when a customer clicks an ambassador’s link and can be redeemed exactly once. Posting it to a coupon site accomplishes nothing, because the code is already used.

Roster also detects a returning customer on the same device and browser and will not mint them a second code, which closes the obvious loophole.

Vanity codes

When a shareable code is still the right call

Codes work where links do not: an Instagram story, a podcast read, a printed insert, an in-person event. Many creators expect a code and are less motivated without one.

The trade-offs are real and worth knowing — no attribution window, weaker data than links, and exposure to coupon extensions. Most brands run both and use leakproof codes on the link.

Codes live inside discount rules, and the rule does three jobs: it defines the offer, it contains every code generated under it, and it determines whether orders using those codes attribute as referrals or as personal orders. Shopify-linked rules are managed end to end by Roster, with a View in Shopify link when you need advanced options.

Questions brands ask

Can a leakproof code be used more than once?

No. Each is single use and expires on redemption, including for the customer who received it.

Do we have to use the rstr.co short link?

No, you can use your destination URL instead. We recommend the short link because it lets you change the destination later without ambassadors updating anything.

Can we import codes from our old platform?

Yes, both assigned and unassigned codes, in bulk.

Do these work outside Shopify?

Smart links and shareable codes work anywhere. Leakproof code generation and automatic application at checkout are Shopify features, with a documented callback approach for headless and non-Shopify carts.

Can we run buy-one-get-one offers?

Roster does not natively support BXGY rules, but you can create the discount in Shopify and append it to the smart link destination URL.
